The need: Freedom and flexibility
We fly often. There's hardly a spot in Europe or Asia where we haven't been. We watch in-flight entertainment a lot.
The IFE hardware we see is very well made. It has capabilities beyond what airlines are able to tap. We knew that more powerful software would allow airlines to take advantage of everything their hardware can offer.
Fortunately, we happen to be in the software business. We started talking with airlines, and they all told us the same thing: They need a creative and innovative new way to use the IFE systems they spent millions to install. They want their IFE hardware to live up to its potential. They want the freedom to offer content beyond movies and games, to add customized features and functions – and to do all this quickly, easily, and inexpensively.
The answer: AirPlay
We listened carefully. In September 2004, we introduced our newest product – AirPlay, the revolutionary independent software platform for in-flight entertainment systems. It enables airlines to run multiple applications simultaneously, to develop new features themselves (or have it done easily by a third party), and to upload changes to their aircraft whenever they want.
Even before the official product launch, we attracted the attention of a launch customer, which will use AirPlay to power a new generation of IFE systems. Other airlines are looking at AirPlay as the way to get a higher return from their existing systems – while dramatically improving the experience for passengers.
